TV Wall Mounting on Plasterboard Wall

Mounting a TV on a plasterboard wall requires the correct fixings, careful assessment and an understanding of the wall structure behind the plasterboard. At TV Mounter, we provide professional TV wall mounting on plasterboard walls for TVs from 24″ up to 100″+, including Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL, Panasonic, Philips and Sky Glass.

With over 10 years of experience, our installers know how to identify different plasterboard wall constructions and choose a suitable fixing method based on the TV size, weight, bracket type and condition of the wall.

Whether you have a standard stud wall, plasterboard fixed to timber battens or another plasterboard construction, we aim to achieve a strong, secure and accurately positioned installation.

TV Wall Mounting on Plasterboard Wall

Can You Mount a TV on a Plasterboard Wall?

Yes. TVs can be safely mounted on many plasterboard walls when the wall is properly assessed and suitable fixings are used.

Plasterboard itself is relatively thin, so installing a television is different from mounting directly onto brick or concrete. The fixing method needs to take into account what is behind the plasterboard and the weight and movement of the TV.

Before installation, we consider:

  • TV size and weight

  • Plasterboard condition and thickness

  • Location of timber or metal studs where applicable

  • Cavity depth behind the plasterboard

  • TV bracket design

  • Fixed, tilt or full-motion installation

  • Position of electrical sockets and cables

  • Proposed TV height and viewing position

This allows us to select an appropriate installation method rather than treating every plasterboard wall in the same way.

Plasterboard Wall Types We Work With

Not every plasterboard wall is constructed in exactly the same way. Understanding the structure behind the surface is an important part of a secure TV installation.

Stud walls are commonly constructed using timber or metal framing with plasterboard fixed over the framework. Where suitable studs are available in the required position, they may provide strong fixing points for the TV bracket.

Some properties have plasterboard fitted over battens, while others may have different cavity depths or internal structures. We assess the wall before deciding on the appropriate fixing method.

If your wall is actually dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry rather than a hollow stud wall, it requires a different approach because the supporting structure is different.

Our Plasterboard TV Mounting Process

We start by discussing your preferred TV position and viewing height. Measurements are taken carefully so that the television is centred correctly in relation to the wall, furniture, fireplace or other features in the room.

The wall is then assessed to determine its construction and suitable fixing locations. The bracket is positioned, levelled and securely installed using fixings appropriate for the wall and installation.

Once the TV is mounted, we check its position, stability and alignment before organising the connected cables and equipment.

Our aim is to leave you with a clean installation that looks professionally finished and feels secure.

Types of Wall Mounts

At TV Mounter, we can install all types of TV wall mounts on suitable plasterboard walls, including fixed, tilt, full-motion, swivel and slim-fit wall mounts. However, not every plasterboard wall has the same construction or strength. Before installing the TV, we inspect the wall structure, available fixing points, cavity, studs where applicable, TV weight and the type of bracket being used. This assessment is particularly important with full-motion and swivel brackets because extending the TV away from the wall creates additional leverage and load on the fixing points.

Flat and Fixed Bracket

A fixed or flat TV wall bracket keeps the television relatively close to the wall and is a popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms and media areas. Because there is very little movement after installation, fixed brackets generally place less leverage on the wall than brackets that extend significantly away from it. The suitability of any installation still depends on the wall structure, TV weight, bracket and fixing points.

Tilt TV Bracket

Tilt brackets allow the television screen to angle slightly downward. They can be useful when a TV needs to be installed higher than normal, including some bedroom and above-furniture installations. We make sure the bracket, fixing method and plasterboard structure are suitable for the weight and intended position of the television.

Full-Motion TV Bracket

Full-motion TV brackets can place significantly more stress on a plasterboard wall than fixed or tilt brackets. When the TV is pulled away from the wall, the extended arm creates additional leverage on the fixing points. With larger or heavier TVs, this force can increase further. If the plasterboard, studs or supporting structure cannot safely handle the load, the installation may become insecure. We therefore inspect the wall construction and strength before recommending or installing a full-motion bracket.

Fixings We Use for Plasterboard TV Wall Mounting

Heavy-duty plasterboard fixings often used where suitable for the load and wall construction.

Large cavity fixings designed to spread the load behind plasterboard

open behind the board and distribute the load across a wider area

expand behind the plasterboard to create a secure fixing point

Suitable screws/coach screws fixed directly into structural timber studs.

Used for appropriate lighter-duty applications rather than automatically for heavy TVs.

Plasterboard TV Wall Mounting FAQs

Yes, many TVs can be securely mounted on plasterboard walls when the wall construction is suitable and the correct fixing method is selected. The TV weight, bracket and structure behind the plasterboard all need to be considered.

Studs can provide useful structural fixing points, but the appropriate installation method depends on the particular wall, bracket and TV. The wall should be assessed rather than assuming every plasterboard installation is identical.

Large TVs can be installed on suitable plasterboard walls, but the wall structure and fixing method become increasingly important as TV weight and bracket loads increase. We assess these factors before installation.

It may be possible, but full-motion brackets create greater leverage because the TV can extend away from the wall. The wall construction and fixing arrangement therefore need careful assessment.

Yes, where the plasterboard wall has a suitable cavity and a clear route. Cable concealment is subject to the construction of the wall and what is located inside the cavity.

We can work with a suitable customer-supplied bracket or advise on the appropriate bracket type for the television and required viewing position.
